Not much changed on the Malibu between 1978 and 1979. The 1979 Malibu was a mid-size vehicle available as both the Malibu and Malibu Classic.

The Malibu body styles included a Sport Coupe, Sedan, and Station Wagon while the Malibu Classic body styles included all the body styles on the Malibu in addition to a Landau Coupe. A Special Equipment Order police car was also available to replace the discontinued 4-door Novas previously used by the police force.

The base engine in the 1979 Malibu was a 200 cubic-inch V6. A 5.0-liter V8 or a 4.4-liter small-block V8 were optional. A three-speed manual transmission came standard but 1,903 Malibus were purchased with the optional MM4 four-speed transmission. In the front was a horizontally-divided grille in four horizontal sections, each one divided into two rows. New tail lamps could be found in the back and 849 buyers selected the optional power sky roof for their Malibu. 8,300 Malibus were fitted with the F41 sport suspension.

Standard equipment included an inside hood release, locking glove compartment, front stabilizer bar, heater/defroster, concealed wiper blades, High-Energy ignition, and inside day/night mirror.

The Malibu Classic and Landau trim levels added a special acoustical package and dual horns. The Landau had silver sport wheel covers and a vinyl roof. Wagons came equipped with wheel opening moldings, full wheel covers, and power brakes. The most popular body style for the 1979 model year was the Malibu Classic sedan, with 104,222 examples sold whereas only 25,213 examples of the Malibu Classic Landau were sold.
