Mike H’s 1970 Chevelle SS396

Built From The Ground Up

Mike H’s 1970 Chevelle SS396

A barn was where Mike H. found this 1970 Chevelle nosed in during 2016. He found the Craigslist ad and took the ten hour trek to inspect the car.

Since Mike had an almost identical car back when he was in high school, he had to have this one. It was the same color inside and out, he had been looking for an example such as this for a claimed 25 years.

Thankfully, this 1970 Chevelle wasn’t a basket case when he got to it. It had an older restoration done to it so the condition was relatively good, just a bit tired from neglect. Mike disassembled the entire car and replaced whatever he deemed questionable. After all, if he was going to spend the time and effort, he wanted it done right.

Mike restored the car to a manual M22 Muncie, as someone had previously put in a 700R4 automatic. The transmission is paired to the original 396/350hp big block. This Chevelle is an “L” code stamped car from the Kansas City plant, which generally indicates that it received the SS option package when being built.

He plans on addressing any small issues that may arise but ultimately intends to keep it as original as possible.
