Kennith M’s 1970 Chevelle

Built From The Ground Up

Kennith M’s 1970 Chevelle

This 1970 Chevelle SS story began in June of 1970 when Kennith saw this red and white 1970 SS sitting on the dealership showroom floor in Whitewright, Texas. Having just graduated from high school in May of that year, his plans were to work odd jobs through the summer, then start college that fall. Then those plans were changed.

He got serious about finding a job so he could buy this 1970 Chevelle SS. In July 1970, he landed a good-paying job, so his next move was to buy this 1970 SS. In early Sept. 1970, he purchased his 1970 Chevelle SS for the price of $3600.00.

He still owns that same 1970 Chevelle SS to this day. Yes, this Chevelle is a ONE-owner car. His Chevelle came from the factory with a 402 cubic inch engine, turbo 400 transmission, console shift, bucket seats, factory air, and front disc brakes.

In the summer of 1977, while driving to work one morning, a valve broke in half. The bottom portion of the valve went through the top of a piston. Then out through the side of the block. The top half of the valve jammed into the side of the head, ruining the entire engine. The motor at this time had 147,000 miles on it.

He had his car hauled into his local mechanic’s garage. His mechanic took the numbers off his original engine and went to the Chevrolet dealership in Sherman, Texas. He ordered him the exact same complete engine. He put another 153,000 miles on the new engine before he had this engine completely rebuilt in 2015.

The engine was bored 30 over with everything internal being replaced in block and heads. He also had the transmission rebuilt for the first time. The transmission was working fine he just thought this would be a good time to rebuild it since it was out of the car. Everything except the crank was replaced. The motor and the paint are the only things about his car that are not original. The paint is the original color, but the car has been repainted. The interior is still all original.

Somewhat rare are the white strips and white vinyl top, it also came with a red interior.

Future modifications are aluminum intake and headers. He’s in the process of changing the original AM radio out with AM/FM Bluetooth radio which he purchased from Ground Up.
