Stainless Steel: 304 or 409?

Exhaust systems are prone to rusting and rusting through. They are comprised of fairly thin metal that’s heated and cooled repeatedly which causes condensation. Plus they are exposed to the weather and salt on the ground. In our classic cars, nobody wants to look under it and see a rusty exhaust system. Luckily, there are a few options for exhaust systems: 304 and 409 Stainless Steel. What’s the difference? Let’s take a look!

What is 304 Stainless Steel?

304 stainless steel is a high-quality, austenitic stainless steel alloy containing chromium and nickel. It is known for its excellent corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance, and aesthetic appearance. Due to its superior properties, 304 stainless steel is commonly used in applications requiring durability and longevity – think stainless steel headers.

  • Chromium 18% – 20%
  • Nickel 8% – 10%

What is 409 Stainless Steel?

409 stainless steel is a ferritic stainless steel alloy containing chromium but with lower nickel content compared to 304 stainless steel. While it offers good corrosion resistance and heat resistance, it is not as corrosion resistant as 304 stainless steel. However, 409 stainless steel is more economical and commonly used in automotive exhaust systems.

  • Chromium 10.5% – 11.75%
  • Nickel 0.5%

Differences Between 304 and 409 Stainless Steel

Corrosion Resistance: One of the key differences between 304 and 409 stainless steel is their corrosion resistance. 304 stainless steel offers better corrosion resistance, making it ideal for applications exposed to harsh environments and corrosive elements. On the other hand, while 409 stainless steel provides good corrosion resistance, it is not as resistant as 304 stainless steel and may be prone to rust in certain conditions.

Temperature Resistance: Both 304 and 409 stainless steel have good temperature resistance. However, 304 stainless steel can withstand higher temperatures than 409 stainless steel, making it suitable for high-performance applications where exhaust gases reach elevated temperatures.

Aesthetic Appearance: 304 stainless steel is known for its bright, shiny finish, making it popular for applications where aesthetics are important. In contrast, 409 stainless steel has a duller appearance and may develop surface rust over time.

Pros and Cons of 304 Stainless Steel

Pros:

  • Excellent corrosion resistance
  • High temperature resistance
  • Aesthetic appearance
  • Longevity and durability

Cons:

  • Higher cost compared to 409 stainless steel
  • Overkill for applications with lower corrosion risk

Pros and Cons of 409 Stainless Steel:

Pros:

  • Economical choice
  • Good corrosion resistance for most automotive exhaust applications
  • Suitable for moderate temperature environments

Cons:

  • Lower corrosion resistance compared to 304 stainless steel
  • Duller appearance
  • Prone to surface rust in certain conditions

When choosing between 304 and 409 stainless steel for automotive exhaust systems, it is essential to think about corrosion resistance, temperature resistance, cost, and cosmetic preferences. While 304 stainless steel offers better corrosion resistance and looks, it comes at a higher cost. On the other hand, 409 stainless steel provides good corrosion resistance at a more affordable price point, making it a practical choice for many automotive applications. Ultimately, the selection depends on the specific requirements and budget of the project.

Most off the shelf stainless exhaust kits will be made out of the 409 Stainless. It’s a great economical choice that’s far superior to a non-stainless exhaust system.
