Craig D’s 1969 El Camino

Built From The Ground Up

Craig D’s 1969 El Camino

Craig found this El Camino in Kijiji, Ontario. He has quite the little story to go along with his journey. He flew from Winnipeg, Mb. to Toronto to catch an $8 bus. That bus would take him to another bus, to travel on to North Bay, On. He only had 13 minutes from the time the plane landed to the time the first bus departed. Craig did not make the bus after running through the Toronto airport. So instead of $8, it cost him $50 for a cab. Then he traveled to North Bay, On. While he traveled he met a couple people and one guy told him the meaning of “El Camino”. He said it meant “the path, or the route”.

As for the car, Craig is building a SBC 383 stroker for it, but has a SBC 400 in it now. The El Camino was originally an automatic converted to a manual transmission. Craig did not know it was a SBC 400 and thought it was a SBC 350. So while the 383 is still in the build stage, he installed the rebuilt M-22 transmission and balanced flywheel. He also put in a Champion 4-core radiator and electric fans. The previous owner had a newer steering column with windshield wipers on the turn signal. The seats are from a newer Chevelle with a higher back and a unique El Camino SS on the upper seat. Craig also has a 4-wheel Right Stuff disc brake system. Along with 15x 7/8 SS wheels with 275’s on the rears.

Craig’s future plans are to make or alter the front 350 marker bezels. He has looked, and has not found 383 marker bezels. He plans on buying 6 used 350 bezels and cutting out the 5 and the 0, taking two threes to make an 8 and putting a 3 on the end. He knows a welder, and is going to talk to him about his plan.

"I really like the catalogs!"
