Back in the late 1970s, Mark J had a Fathom Blue 1969 Chevelle SS convertible that he had recently restored. It was a legitimate 396/375hp L78 4-speed car that was Mark’s pride and joy at the time. With less than 500 miles on the restoration, one of his friends totaled the car while borrowing it for a date. The experience had put Mark off of muscle cars for good, or so he thought.
Fast forward to October of 2017, when Mark was on a trip to Floyd Garret’s Muscle Car Museum in Sevierville, TN. Something triggered inside him, and he knew that the fever was back. He had to have another Chevelle.
After months of searching, he finally found this 1970 Chevelle SS at Motor City Classic Cars in Vero Beach, FL. He is now the third owner of this numbers matching Oshawa, Canada built SS396 / 350hp example.
Luckily being a Canadian built car, the GM Heritage package build sheets are available to authenticate the car’s pedigree, revealing that this 1970 Chevelle was originally sold at Capitol Motors LTD of Hartford, CT.
This 1970 Chevelle had received a frame-off restoration approximately 5 years ago and has only tacked on a few thousand miles since it was completed. Mark has been freshening up bits and pieces as necessary (and as funds allow) over the past year or so of his ownership.
“The 1970 Chevelle has a one year styling and was the last of the high horse power classics. Everyone seems to remember growing up with someone who had one or owned one themselves. This car gets lots of thumbs up when I take her out for a spin.”
